About The Greeneway Trail

The North Augusta Greeneway, known to most citizens as "The Greeneway", was named after former Mayor Thomas W. Greene (1985-1997). The Greeneway is a 7+ mile paved recreational trail that follows an abandoned railroad right of way purchased by the city in 1988. Download our Greeneway Brochure

Development of The Greeneway Trail

Phase I of the Greeneway, 3.3 miles, travels from the Georgia Avenue Bridge to Martintown Road. Phase II, another 1.5 miles, extends the Greeneway to Pisgah Road. In 1999, the city constructed Phase III, a pedestrian bridge over Martintown Road connecting Phases I and II. Phase IV, completed in 2000, extended the Greeneway another 0.5 miles east from the Georgia Avenue Bridge to the Clubhouse at the RiverClub Golf Course.

Riverfront GreenewayFollowing the aforementioned phases, construction was completed on an extension of the Greeneway that connected the trail to the North Augusta riverfront. The 1.5 mile extension forks off the existing trail near Crystal Lake, follows Crystal Creek through the woods to the Savannah River, meanders along the riverbank to the Georgia Avenue Bridge and connects with the roundabout and sidewalk at Riverside Boulevard.

The most recent phase of the Greeneway was completed in 2011. The 1.1 mile extension extends from Pisgah Road to Bergen Road with a new terminus along Bergen Road that has ample parking for visitors to utilize.

Greeneway Trail Funding

In addition to city funds, construction of the Greeneway has been funded by grants from the South Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation, South Carolina Department of Transportation and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The city has provided materials, equipment and labor.

Greeneway Trail Access

The Greeneway meanders throughout the city and many of its neighborhoods. The general public may access the Greeneway at three locations. The Greeneway is open from dawn to dusk and is regularly patrolled by the Department of Public Safety. Pets are permitted but must be on a leash at all times. The western terminus is located at Pisgah Road just off Five Notch Road. Limited parking is available at this location.

  • Parking and Greeneway access is also located near the Greeneway's eastern terminus off of Riverside Boulevard opposite the entrance drive to the River Golf Club.
  • The Greeneway may also be accessed at its approximate midpoint at Riverview Park, 101 Riverview Park Drive. This part of the trail travels under the main entrance to the Riverview Park Activities Center.
  • Adequate parking is available at Riverview Park. See below the mileage map from Riverview Park as the starting point.

Greeneway Trail Etiquette  Public Walking Trail

North Augusta Greeneway Trail Etiquette & Safety Tips

  1. Avoid walking more than two people abreast: This allows other users to pass safely. Please form a single line in congested areas or when others are trying to pass. Please help us make the trail a friendly environment for all trail users by not blocking the path. Travel in a consistent and predictable manner. Always look before changing positions on the trail.

  2. Stay to the right, pass on the left: Please always stay to the right of the trail to facilitate 2-way traffic and using caution when passing other trail users on the left.

  3. Cyclists should always ride single file, announce themselves when passing “On your left” and travel at a safe speed: Please slow down in congested areas. Always maintain a safe speed that allows you to brake and turn quickly. Remember that pedestrians always have the right-of-way.

  4. Keep dogs on a leash: All four-legged users must be kept on a leash that is six feet long or shorter. Always pick up after your pet and dispose of animal waste.

  5. Avoid standing still: This helps prevent collisions. Please step off of the trail if you need to pause or take a rest.

  6. Use Caution at street crossings: Please slow and stop at all street crossings and use caution when proceeding into the intersection, even when using a marked crosswalk. Don’t assume that vehicles are going to stop.

  7. Hide any valuables you intend to leave in your vehicle: To prevent theft, hide any valuables from sight in your car. Please remember to also lock your car doors.

  8. Teach your children proper trail etiquette: Prevent accidents involving children by ensuring that your children understand these rules and how to be safe on the Greeneway.

  9. Listen for others: Headphones may impair your ability to hear and react to potentially dangerous situations.

  10. No motorized vehicles are allowed.  ADA-approved electronic personal mobility devices are allowed. However, please note that in order to maintain the trail you may occasionally encounter City maintenance trucks, mowers, or Parks and recreation staff golf carts on and alongside the trail.

  11. Wear a helmet: Cyclists, roller skaters/bladers, and skateboard users should always wear helmets.

  12. Respect Private Property, Stay on the Trail.

  13. Trail Hours: Dawn to Dusk: Most of the Greeneway is not lighted and is closed at nighttime. This does not apply to the River section of the Greeneway that is lighted. Lights are programmed to go out at 11pm.

  14. Emergency: Please call 911, remember to look for the emergency trail marker numbers located in the middle of the trail every 1/10th mile as references when reporting your location on the Greeneway.

The North Augusta Greeneway from the Municipal Building to the Woodstone subdivision is designed for recreation bikers. Bicyclists wanting to train for events are encouraged to use the Palmetto Parkway Greeneway. This section of the trail has significantly less traffic and provides the hills and length to help those cyclists accomplish successful training.
